The Problems With Storing Nuclear Waste.
There has been a series of ABOVE GROUND Leaks in the last 2 months at the
WIPP Storage Facility here in New Mexico.
I live in New Mexico as everybody knows. What you may not know, is that the creation, development
and testing of the first atomic bombs happened here in Los Alamos, NM which is about
a 2 1/2 hour drive North of my city. The Lab itself has created lots of waste beginning
around 1940 and up to present day - 2014.....
too quote: "Transuranic waste often consists of materials which have come in contact
with radioactive substances such as plutonium and uranium. This often includes
gloves, tools, rags, and assorted machinery often used in the production of
nuclear fuel and weapons.[4] Although much less potent than nuclear reactor byproducts,
this waste still remains radioactive for approximately 24,000 years.[6]
This change in classification led to a decrease in safety parameters for the proposed facility,
allowing construction to continue at a faster pace" [who is surprised by this, i ask???]
What i am getting at, is this.
Not only does NM still work with nuclear products and create waste, NM has the Waste Storage Facility.
This is located in S.E. New Mexico near White Sands. This location is referred to as the
"Waste Isolation Pilot Plant."
There has been a series of ABOVE GROUND Leaks in the last 2 months.
AND - Workers have been contaiminated.
here is alittle info on the latest LEAK - WHICH DOD and DOE told Congress & citizens of NM -
Would N-E-V-E-R happen:
Department of Energy officials say a monitoring station picked up elevated radiation readings around the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad on March 11.
That's nearly a month after a Valentine's Day leak contaminated 17 workers and shut the only repository for toxic waste from the nation's nuclear bomb-building program.
Engineers say they believe the contamination is from previous deposits on the inner surface of exhaust ductwork.
Officials say occasional low-level releases are anticipated, but they should be well within safe limits.
[ok. but what made the truck catch fire underground in a salt mine ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ]
The plant has been shuttered [closed] since early February.
Shipments were halted after a truck hauling salt through the
repository's tunnels caught fire.
Nine days later, the plant's alarms were triggered by the
radiation release.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
The final facility contains a total of 56 storage rooms located approximately 650 meters underground.
[650 meters is 2100 FEET BELOW GROUND.]
Each room is 100 yards in length.[9] The plant is estimated to continue accepting waste
for 25 to 35 years and is estimated to cost a grand total of 19 billion dollars.[11]
