Uncle Oskar and the ONE Universal Language
Uncle Oskar was very well traveled. He told me my entire life, that I could go any where I wanted to.
And I believed him because he traveled. Beside - there is the Viking Spirit of Adventure…
AND ~ he spoke to people. No one was a stranger. People were also drawn to him. Maybe cause of his size; his huge laugh; his kind eyes … there was something
He was so great fun to go places with. It would always become an adventure and there would always be a story…
He would say, “Look at me. I go everywhere. I speak 2 languages only. you must carry a small paper pad in your breast pocket so you can draw a picture ~ of a train; a coffee cup; when you add tiny string and small tag to coffee cup it becomes a tea cup; and so on.”
I am not fond of a shirt with pockets so I always carried the pad in my camera bag !!!! still handy.
He taught me from a very young age that there is one Universal Language and that Universal Language is Human Kindness. And people can see it shining from behind and thru your eyes. Kindness begets kindness.
I remember the first time I wandered around Europe alone for 6 weeks. Never forget this experience. And think - Americans rarely even take 2 weeks vacation .. .. ..
Oskar was absolutely right about Human Kindness. People do see that Spirit of Kindness in the eyes of a Kind Person. I have been very grateful he made a point to share his experience and wisdom with me.. .. .. And I really only speak one language …
May all your travels be adventures !
